Susie Collaborates with SAASTA Class

As part of their Stage 1 Integrated Learning class, PLHS Year 10 SAASTA students have been designing and creating artworks to be represented on their SAASTA/Power Cup polo shirts later this year. The “For Our Elders” theme that the students are working on is in line with the 2023 NAIDOC theme.  Students have been researching elders and their contribution to communities, as well as collaborating with renowned local Indigenous artist, Susie Betts.

Born in Port Lincoln, Susie’s cultural ties are with the Wirangu, Mirning and Kokatha people of the Far West Coast of South Australia. Susie has been painting and designing for many years. In her business Wiyana Spirit Creative (Wiyana meaning “woman”), she blends old and new, working in many mediums, including paintings, prints, digital graphics, portraits and landscapes, photography, poetry and story-telling.

Port Lincoln High School is extremely grateful to Susie for the time she has been able to spend with our students, sharing her knowledge, experience and creative spirit in guiding and assisting students’ artworks.

Our final designs will be submitted to SAASTA at the end of March, with the winning design (from SAASTA students across SA) to be announced prior to the Power Cup (held in Adelaide in May). Port Lincoln was successful in 2022 with Dre Vlassco’s design declared the winner – his Rainbow Serpent design provided protection over the Aboriginal Flag and its people.
