Students Visit Iluka’s Jacinth-Ambrosia Mine
Students keen on pursuing a career in the mining industry were selected to attend a personalised tour of Iluka Resources’ Jacinth-Ambrosia (JA) operation. This site is the world’s largest zircon mine and is located 190 kilometres west of Ceduna.
The JA mine has a diverse workforce, with many local Indigenous and female staff members undertaking a variety of positions across the site. The students received a warm welcome from all employees. They were fortunate enough to meet both the Iluka CEO Mr Tom O’Leary and JA General Manager Mr Dan Tucker, as well as personnel including machine operators, environmental scientists, laboratory technicians and engineers.
Our students participated in an exceptional hands-on tour, with each stage of the extraction, processing and rehabilitation processes clearly explained. Iluka staff provided an insight into the variety of tasks employees undertake as well as the allied industries involved in the operation.
PLHS extends our sincere thanks to Iluka Resources for their efforts; in particular, we wish to acknowledge Environmental Manager Joanne Lee for coordinating this successful excursion.
~ Ms Melia Daw (Assistant Principal: STAR)
