Selamat Hari Merdeka Indonesia!

Last week, our Year 7, 8 and 9 Indonesian classes celebrated Indonesian Independence Day (Hari Merdeka / August 17th) with various activities held throughout the week.
The students designed and made their own celebration Penjors, fondly referred to as Balinese Christmas trees, which they tied to the entrance of the Specialist Building. The Year 9’s cooked up a feast of lumpia (spring rolls) and kue kelapa (coconut pudding), while the Year &’s and 8’s tried (and loved) a traditional Indonesian snack of nasi putih, krupuk singkong, krupuk bawang, ketimun and kecap manis. Finally, they tried the traditional eating competition game of Krupuk Mie, which was fun but messy!
The students learnt about Indonesia’s history, the importance of this day and the way it is celebrated. It was an exciting week, and the students really enjoyed their learning experiences.
Terima kasih,
~Bu McGown (Indonesian teacher)
