Craig Nominated for SA Public Education Award

On behalf of the Port Lincoln High School Governing Council, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to Craig Akehurst on being named a finalist in the SA Public Education Awards for Excellence in Leadership.

Craig is a true pioneer and changemaker who challenges traditional approaches to education while keeping young people at the centre of everything he does. Over the past three years, Craig has brought the concept of Crew to our school, engaging both students and staff to reflect, question and think — and ultimately, to do things differently.

As a Governing Council, we have witnessed a significant cultural shift across our school. Staff are questioning their pedagogy and making meaningful changes to become more engaged, enthusiastic and genuinely student-focused. At the same time, we are seeing students demonstrate increased attendance, stronger engagement in the classroom and across year levels, and a greater sense of resilience, responsibility and ownership of their learning and participation.

But the true focus of Crew extends far beyond education. It is about giving young people the opportunity to discover what they are capable of, develop their skills and confidence, and build a strong, grounded sense of personal worth and belonging. Through his leadership, and by empowering his staff to embrace this approach, Craig is creating opportunities for young people to feel seen, valued, capable and important — while equipping them with the skills, knowledge and confidence they need for their future.

That kind of leadership takes courage, vision and a willingness to challenge the status quo and do things differently.

Craig, this is such well-deserved recognition of your passionate and groundbreaking work. We are incredibly fortunate to have you leading change for young people here on the Eyre Peninsula.
