Year 6’s Explore Cultures & Languages at PLHS

Yesterday, we were delighted to host approximately 110 Year 6 students and staff from Port Lincoln Primary School, Kirton Point Primary School, Lincoln Gardens Primary School, Lake Wangary School and Poonindie Community Learning Centre for our second Exploring Culture & Languages @ PLHS expo.

This event was designed to showcase the three cultures/languages on offer at PLHS – Aboriginal, Indonesian and Japanese. Our Year 6 guests formed eight groups in the Specialist Building, with each Crew rotating through the following range of culture– and language–based activities:

ABORIGINAL:

• Indigenous weaving

INDONESIAN:

• Ketupat paper craft
• Penjor making & decorating
• Lomba relays
• Angklung musical instruments

JAPANESE:

• Hiragana escape room
• Sumo squat challenge and Kendama competition
• Hashi chopstick challenges

• Sensu folding fans

Congratulations to our Languages teachers and Aboriginal Education team on their wonderful organisation and delivery of the event. The consistently high engagement levels on display in each space were indicative of months of thoughtful planning. It was clear to those in attendance that the participating students greatly enjoyed connecting with each other through culture and language.

Well done also to the twenty-five PLHS Year 9 Language students who volunteered to support our staff in facilitating yesterday's activities and welcoming/farewelling our Year 6 visitors. The efforts of these students went a long way towards fostering a strong sense of belonging to our Port Lincoln High School Crew.

We trust that the Year 6's enjoyed their time spent with us yesterday in what has become a very popular element of our extensive transition to high school program.
