Year 6’s Explore Culture & Languages at PLHS

Earlier today, we were delighted to host hundreds of Year 6 students and staff from Port Lincoln Primary School, Kirton Point Primary School, Lincoln Gardens Primary School and Poonindie Community Learning Centre for our inaugural Exploring Culture & Languages @ PLHS expo.

This initiative was designed to showcase the three cultures/languages on offer at PLHS – Aboriginal, Indonesian and Japanese. Together with our current Year 7’s, our Year 6 guests formed eight groups in the Specialist Building; each crew rotated through the following range of culture– and language–based activities:

ABORIGINAL:

  • Indigenous spinning tops

INDONESIAN:

  • Ketupat paper craft
  • Penjor making & decorating
  • Lomba relays
  • Angklung musical instruments

JAPANESE:

  • Hiragana escape room
  • Sumo squat challenge
  • Kendama competition
  • Hashi chopstick challenges
  • Oni mask decorating

Congratulations to our Languages teachers and Aboriginal Education team on their wonderful organisation and delivery of today’s event. The consistently high engagement levels on display in each space were indicative of months of thoughtful planning. It was clear to those in attendance that the participating students greatly enjoyed connecting with each other through culture and language.

Well done also to the twenty Year 8 students who volunteered to support our staff in facilitating today’s activities; a special mention must go to (pictured below L-R) Skyla Long, Dhanura Madiarachchige, Neve Thomas, Frankie Woolford and Mavis Coleman, who delivered welcome and farewell messages to the Year 6’s in Barngarla, Indonesian and Japanese language.
