Susie Delivers “Songlines” Workshops

We were recently honoured to welcome ex-student and proud Wirangu woman Susie Betts back to our school for an enriching learning expedition. Susie delivered insightful “Songlines” workshops to three different classes, sharing the profound connection between astronomy and Aboriginal culture.

This visit was part of our Term 1 exploration of Astronomy & Ancient Civilisations, where we delved into the wonders of Ancient Greek, Ancient Egyptian, and Ancient Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander civilisations. Each week, we focused on fascinating topics such as the sun, moon, and star constellations, eclipses, seasons and calendars, navigation and exploration, and tools and technology.

Susie shared her deep connection to songlines, particularly “The Seven Sisters”, and took the time to connect individually with our students. Her oral sharing inspired two students to write their historical report on the connection between Ancient Aboriginal people and astronomy, and two others for their upcoming historical narrative about exploration and navigation.

Thank you, Susie, for inspiring us with your wisdom and stories!
