On Thursday May 28th, our Year 11 and 12 Japanese language crew was invited to attend a civic reception hosted by the City of Port Lincoln in honour of the Consul General of Japan’s special visit to our community.

The students and I walked to the Council Chambers to participate in this unique opportunity; the welcome reception included presentations and speeches by Mayor Diana Mislov, Chairperson of the Muroto Port Lincoln Friendship Committee, Shaun Thomas, and the guest of honour himself, Consul General Furuya of Japan. Entertainment included a performance showcasing traditional Japanese instruments, the thirteen-stringed koto and taiko drum. Our students were able to engage in conversations in both Japanese and English with local leaders and community members who share connections to Japan.

This event not only gave our students a chance to demonstrate their school values and utilise their Japanese language skills in a real-world context, but it also deepened their understanding of international relationships and intercultural respect. Further, the afternoon provided valuable insight into local government protocols and highlighted the importance of community involvement and global citizenship.

Thank you to everyone who supported this memorable and enriching learning experience.
