Last Thursday and Friday, our Year 10 Science students were fortunate to participate in STEM-based workshops coordinated by Questacon, Australia’s National Science and Technology Centre. Questacon is focused on supporting young people to develop the attributes, skills, knowledge and agency to thrive in tomorrow’s world.
Several groups were in turn given a problem to solve and were encouraged to think critically and creatively using Makey Makey kits – these are invention devices designed to connect everyday objects to computer keys; using a circuit board, alligator clips, and a USB cable, the toy uses closed loop electrical signals to send the computer either a keyboard stroke or mouse click signal, thus converting the assorted objects into touchpads.
Our students demonstrated excellent levels of engagement across the hour and a half sessions. We are thankful to the Questacon presenters for the opportunity to participate.
