Schedule Published for Centenary Celebration Weekend

It’s our 100th birthday! Old scholars and staff are invited to return to PLHS on the October long weekend to participate in a range of celebratory events.  The full schedule has just been finalised and published by the school’s centenary planning committee.

Port Lincoln High School’s Centenary Celebration Weekend will commence on the evening of Friday September 29 with the CENTENARY SHOWCASE, a gala concert in the Nautilus Theatre featuring performances by the school’s current Dance, Drama and Music students.  Amongst the special guests in the audience will be the Governor of South Australia – Her Excellency, the Honourable Frances Adamson AC – who will officially open the event and address the patrons in attendance.  The night will also feature opportunities to view Art/Design works produced by PLHS students and an interval with finger food provided by Food & Hospitality classes.

For those wanting to see how the school’s facilities have evolved and currently stand, GUIDED CAMPUS TOURS will be offered across Saturday September 30 (morning only) and Sunday October 1 (all day).  The hour-long tours will depart half-hourly from the car park at the top of Ruskin Road, and will conclude in the Resource Centre; here, patrons will have access to view one hundred years of digitised school archives– this enormous quantity of PLHS photos, articles, yearbooks and documents have been painstakingly scanned and catalogued by the Port Lincoln History Group.

Amongst the campus tours on Sunday October 1 will be a TIME CAPSULE CEREMONY on the steps in front of the PLHS Hall (near the Front Office).  This will involve revealing the time capsule that was buried in 1998 to mark the school’s 75th anniversary and the installation of a replacement centenary capsule.  For a gold coin donation, the Rotary Club of Port Lincoln will kindly provide a SAUSAGE SIZZLE LUNCH near the PLHS Commercial Kitchen.

Bush Church Aid have a long and proud relationship with Port Lincoln High School; for decades, BCA’s Queen Street boarding quarters were integral in enabling young girls from all over the Eyre Peninsula to attend PLHS.  After lunch on the Sunday, the BCA THANKSGIVING SERVICE in the school’s Resource Centre will provide a wonderful opportunity to reflect, reminisce and reconnect, with an afternoon tea (scones/tea/coffee) to follow the service.

The weekend’s big finale will be Sunday night’s glitzy CENTENARY CELEBRATION in the Port Lincoln Hotel Ballroom.  This cocktail-style function with feature guest speakers (headlined by the Honourable Chris Kourakis – ex-PLHS student and current Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in South Australia), live entertainment, historical displays, photo booths and the announcement of the school’s inaugural Hall of Fame inductees.

Across the weekend, former PLHS students and staff will be offered the opportunity to leave a permanent mark on their old school by purchasing and personalising a paver to be installed in our proposed CENTENARY GARDEN project.  Other PLHS merchandise will also be available, including our CENTENARY TEA TOWELS (design below).
