Length: Semester or Full Year
Recommended background: It is strongly recommended (but not essential) that students have successfully completed a semester of Year 10 Woodwork
Content:
Through this course students will develop skills and knowledge to design and construct a furniture piece of their choice. They will engage in the design process, presented through a folio, to develop concepts for their major product. These processes will have a focus on projecting a range of techniques and skills tailored to Stage 2 Materials Solutions – Furniture. They will communicate their designs through technical drawings using traditional methods, as well as CAD (computer-aided design) drawing software.
They will develop skills in the safe and accurate use of portable and fixed power machinery including the radial arm saw and panel saw, and can develop knowledge and skills from the CNC machinery such as the laser cutter or milling machine.
Furniture Construction will focus either on solid carcase or solid timber construction, by using traditional joinery or modern assembly techniques. Students will use either manufactured board to produce fa piece of furniture of their own design or use solid timber to construct a framed item of furniture of their own design.
Safe work practices will be explained and emphasised. Students will be required to complete an online machine safety competency via OnGuard, before operating any workshop equipment or machinery.
