Recommended Background: Successful completion of Year 9 Science

Content:

This topic covers a number of aspects of the Australian Year 10 Science curriculum within the context of aquatic ecosystems and how humans interact with them. Students will develop their knowledge and skills in relation to the interpretation of data, the use of appropriate scientific language and representations, critical thinking and the ability to develop evidence-based arguments.

Students will investigate the anatomy and physiology of aquatic life, underpinning the processes which have led to the array of creatures we have today. They will interpret, analyse and formulate questions in relation to aquatic food webs and ecosystems and investigate the impacts of human activity. Students will explore oceanography and the global systems involved in sustaining the aquatic ecosystem.  They will investigate sustainable fishing practices in relation to local and global contexts, and will evaluate how the values and needs of society influence practices and scientific research.

All units of work can be categorised in 1 or more of key ideas to support students in constructing deep and coherent understandings of the scientific phenomena, comprising their world. The 3 strands include:

  • science understanding
  • science as a human endeavour
  • science inquiry skills

Assessment:

Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Achievement Standards as outlined in the framework of the Australian Curriculum. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes.
