Length: Full Year
Recommended background: Successful completion of Year 10 English or Year 10 Essential English
Content:
Stage 1 Essential English provides students with a pathway to Essential English at year 12 level and also provided students with the opportunity to meet the literacy demands of SACE, where they may have found the more formal aspects of English challenging.
For assessment purposes, the year is arranged into two semester length courses.
The course requires students to engage with contemporary texts that they are familiar with, so that they can fashion responses through negotiated tasks to meet the objectives of the course. They have the freedom to be creative and to construct text that is meaningful and relevant. Course content will often be dictated by the cohort through negotiation with the teacher, who will create a number of assessment tasks that will encourage engagement to meet course requirements. Past texts have included Taika Waititi’s Boy, webpages, short stories, song lyrics, magazines, workplace texts, and films trailers.
Texts will be shorter in length and response writing will not exceed 800 words in any exercise, so that students feel comfortable that the scope of demands is within their reach.
Assessment:
Student performance will be determined according to the subject’s Performance Standards as described in the Subject Outline. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes.
