Thank You for Attending our Open Night

The staff and Governing Council of Port Lincoln High School wish to thank the hundreds of patrons who attended last night’s Open Night for their wonderful involvement.

Those in attendance seemed to really enjoy the opportunity to wander around the campus, meet the staff and find out about a range of our school’s learning and extra-curricular programs. It was particularly great to see current Year 6 students and their families familiarising themselves as part of their transition to high school.

The evening included opportunities for our guests to:

• find out about our assorted Aboriginal Education programs

• feed the barramundi in the Aquaculture Centre

• view displays of Art, Design and Photography work

• find out about our Bridge program

• view a Dance demonstration

• see this year’s Pantomime being prepared

• view curriculum displays of English and HASS work

• enjoy tasty treats and barista-made coffee courtesy of our Food & Hospitality team

• play games and enjoy a sausage sizzle in and around the Gym

• attend the presentation of some historical artefacts (further details below)

• find out about our various Inclusive Education programs (including Corrective Reading)

• explore Indonesian and Japanese language and culture

• listen to a lively set from our acclaimed Stage Band

• learn more about our Senior School, SACE and VET

• try various Science experiments and games, including our Virtual Reality Lab

• launch a CO₂ dragster in Tech

• enjoy a tour and barista-made coffee at our TLC campus

• find out about our assorted Wellbeing programs and meet Hope (our therapy greyhound) and representatives from Headspace

• listen to a presentation about the transition from Year 6 into Year 7

The night’s finale featured a fascinating and unique presentation in the Specialist Building…

Mr. Richard Potter from Adelaide (who has no affiliation with PLHS), came into the possession of a mysterious blue box which contained collection of badges and small booklets. The owner of the box was unknown. Following hours of determined, clever and fortunate research about the items (which included a 1940’s PLHS Prefect’s badge), he was eventually able to conclude that they originally belonged to one of our school’s most esteemed former students, Dr. Barbara Kidman.

Dr. Kidman was a trailblazing woman in the fields of physics and computing – she has a fellowship named in her honour at the University of Adelaide and was one of the first inductees into our inaugural Hall of Fame during last year’s centenary celebrations.

After tracking down and corresponding with Dr. Kidman’s daughter Linda, it was agreed that the box should be gifted to the institution that provided such significant opportunities for her to extend her education to such prestigious levels, Port Lincoln High School.

We are extremely grateful to Richard, not only for his dedicated research, but for his wonderful gesture of driving to Port Lincoln to present the box to our school in person – it was accepted last night with pride and admiration by our Principal, Mr. Craig Akehurst.

Thanks again to last night’s attendees, and to the dedicated staff who were on hand to again showcase our dynamic school.
