Successful Barramundi Spawning Project
Each year, the students in my Year 12 Aquaculture class are given the challenge to spawn our thirteen-year-old broodstock barramundi.
This is one of their major projects; it takes three months of lead-up time to imitate the natural spawning process by slowly raising the temperature of the water, increasing the photoperiod to fifteen hours and feeding the fish a natural diet of fish and squid. Manipulating the environmental conditions is an important skill in the aquaculture business.
Credit to this year’s crew as they were ultimately successful in their project; late last week, they collected over two million eggs.
