Success on Show at PLHS Open Night
Next Wednesday evening, Port Lincoln High School will open its doors to current parents, prospective families and the wider community. On the back of two similar events last year, the school is looking forward to this year’s Open Night on Wednesday March 20th.
Guests will be issued with a campus map and activity schedule upon arrival, before being directed to the school’s Amphitheatre. The night will commence at 5pm with a Welcome to Country (delivered by current students), followed by a success-themed opening address from new Principal Mr. Craig Akehurst. The school’s highly acclaimed Concert Band will then perform a lively set.
From there, attendees will be free to wander the school grounds, browsing through classrooms, meeting and chatting with the friendly PLHS staff, and participating in a range of engaging activities. Many learning spaces will feature curriculum displays produced by current and former PLHS students.
As outlined below, there will be plenty to see and do throughout the night – all welcome.
ABORIGINAL EDUCATION / SAASTA: Guests are urged to visit the stunning Aboriginal Education space which is built around a yarning circle; staff will be on hand to discuss assorted Aboriginal Education programs, including SAASTA.
AQUACULTURE: Success-themed curriculum displays in the Aquaculture Centre, including numerous aquariums and thousands of barramundi fingerlings in the grow-out tanks; Aquaculture teacher Mr. Chris McGown will offer the chance for guests to feed the barra throughout the night.
BRIDGE: Success-themed curriculum displays in BRIDGE (Rooms 17/18), with staff available to discuss their various programs; visitors who correctly complete an adolescent health quiz can win a prize.
ENGLISH & HASS: Success-themed curriculum displays in the Year 7 Building, centred around the faculty’s “Success Tree”.
FOOD & HOSPITALITY: Success-themed curriculum displays in the three kitchens; guests will be able to enjoy a barista-made coffee courtesy of F&H staff and students (gold coin donation).
HPE & OUTDOOR EDUCATION: PE staff will have the Gymnasium open with a range of physical activities on offer; in order to raise funds for (increasingly-expensive) Outdoor Education camps, Mr. Jake Stoll will be running a gold coin donation sausage sizzle on the lawns outside the Gym.
INCLUSIVE EDUCATION: The Inclusive Education team have invited the families of participating students to Rooms 21, 22 and 23 – they look forward to sharing information about their various programs.
LANGUAGES: Bu Ettridge, Booker Sensei and Inger Sensei will greet guests in Indonesian and Japanese in the Specialist Building; they will provide success-themed curriculum displays and cultural activities.
PERFORMING ARTS: Patrons are encouraged to watch the school’s senior Dance and Drama students preparing for their respective major productions; Dance teacher Miss Hanna Minchin will put her students through their paces in the Dance Studio (downstairs in the Performing Arts Centre) – their production is set for late June; meanwhile in the Hall, Drama students will be rehearsing for their upcoming show entitled “Who Says Chickens Can’t Fly?”, as directed by Drama teacher Mrs. Helen Marks – tickets go on sale soon for three public performances (Tuesday April 9, Wednesday April 10 and Thursday April 11).
RESOURCE CENTRE: Success-themed curriculum displays in this multi-purpose facility.
SCIENCE & MATHS: Success-themed curriculum displays on the Stamford Floor; the school’s cutting edge virtual reality Lumination Lab will also be available for guests to try.
SENIOR SCHOOL / STUDENT PATHWAYS: Senior School Assistant Principal Miss Bambi Britten and Student Pathways Leader Ms. Tiffany Evans will be on hand on the Senior Floor to chat about all things SACE, senior school, careers, apprenticeships and vocation education & training (VET).
TECHNOLOGIES: Success-themed curriculum displays in the recently refurbished Technology Building.
VISUAL ARTS: Success-themed curriculum displays in the Specialist Building, including a mini-exhibition of student art and design work.
WELLBEING: The school’s Wellbeing Team – including Hope, the therapy greyhound – will be stationed on the Eyre Floor, providing information about the raft of services and support systems available to PLHS students, including The Resilience Project.
