Important Learning Expedition for Year 8 Crew

Following yesterday’s Remembrance Day observance, our Year 8 crew embarked on a learning expedition earlier today to the Port Lincoln War Memorial. In ideal conditions, well over a hundred Year 8 students – accompanied by their Dharna Crew Leaders – walked to Eyre Park to learn about various aspects of this important site within our community.

Upon arrival at Eyre Park, the Year 8’s were divided into three groups and rotated through the following three stations within the area:

• the Port Lincoln War Memorial (Remembrance Day / ANZAC Day)
• the Tobruk Fig Tree (and the Gallipoli Lone Pine)
• “The Bugler” statue (and three armed forces monuments)

At each location, one of our Year 8 Dharna Crew Leaders was on hand to explain the features and significance of the assorted monuments and artefacts. We were honoured to have Mr. Lee Clayton from the Port Lincoln RSL also in attendance to provide further insightful details.

This morning’s experience contained real-life connections to our Year 8 HASS (History) curriculum, specifically the significance of key people, places and events in Australia’s history – including perspectives on Remembrance Day and the impact of war on our community. The excursion also supported the development of several general capabilities, encouraging thoughtful reflection, ethical understanding and respectful participation.

Throughout the expedition, our Year 8 students were reverent and responsible, listening intently and conducting themselves wonderfully – this was best exemplified by Daniel Rocchi, who delivered a vote of thanks to Mr. Clayton and the organising teachers on behalf of his Year 8 peers.

Well done to all of today’s participants – the success of this learning expedition has energised the Year 8 Dharna Crew Leaders to facilitate more opportunities for this positive crew spirit to be demonstrated in our community.
