Governing Council Community Voice (June)

Rain at last and the garden says thank you. Governing Council began Wednesday night’s meeting by welcoming Ms. Rowena Fox, our Education Director.  Rowena guided us through the selection process for appointing school leaders and noted our priorities and thoughts about the qualities and skills that we as parents require of our Principal.  With the school brimming with energy, student success and a highly committed staff, we look forward to contributing to this momentum through the next selection process.

Thought you’d like to know that PLHS is a leader on Eyre Peninsula offering a broad and comprehensive curriculum as well as providing subject choice, innovation and a variety of teaching and learning settings and styles to meet student needs.  Teacher Joh Walding joined our meeting and spoke about the importance of alternative teaching and learning programs.  Joh explained that these programs provide strong student connection with community and other service providers and the wraparound approach motivates students to strive for success and aspire for their futures.  Joh made it clear that inclusion in alternative learning does not mean exclusion (from uni foundation courses, SACE and ATAR achievement or work and career pathways).  Indeed, factoring life experiences alongside a student-centred and flexible response opens the door to these opportunities during these crucial years of self-development, personal discovery and relationship-building.  Great work Joh, and the PLHS staff team.

A shout out to ex-PLHS student Tianna Boyce who graduated with first class Honours in a Bachelor of Animal Science in 2023, and is now fully funded from 2024 to undertake a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) in Veterinary Sciences.  Tianna has presented her research findings at an international conference in New Zealand, and she has had invitations to attend conferences in Brazil, Europe, USA, and Canada.  Tianna’s success and excellence has come on the back of her determination and resilience in overcoming a number of challenges along the way.  Inspiring achievement, Tianna.

Ever wonder what it would be like to be the Principal of a high school?  Well senior student leader Prapti Pai “became that Principal” at our GC meeting by outlining how she would lead the school into the future through her student’s lens. Look out, Principals – the next generation of school leaders are on their way.

This may interest you, whether a current or ex-student of PLHS? Last year’s centenary celebrations revealed the enduring diversity and success of many thousands of students who have spring boarded their life and work through PLHS.  Their coming together to celebrate the school and its contributions was special and affirming for our institution.  To honour and build upon these connections, the GC is investigating the formation of an alumni (old scholars) group – there is work in progress with more detail to come.

No need to whisper about this one… a reminder that tickets are on sale now through the school’s Front Office for next week’s 2024 PLHS Dance Production, “Whisper”.  This brilliant annual event will be staged in the Nautilus Theatre on Friday June 28^th from 7pm.  Tickets will be available at the door unless sold out prior.  Be loud and encourage family and friends to come along for a great night.

Our next GC meeting is scheduled for Wednesday August 7^th with Emma Richards (Indigenous Leader) and Brigette Clements (PLHS Business Manager) booked in as special guests.  A great meeting coming up and so many good things happening at Port Lincoln High School.  Join us to see and hear about your child’s school.
