Governing Council Community Voice (August)

This has been a COMMUNITY week at PLHS – Governing Council were still buzzing at last night’s meeting because of the outstanding community attendance at the school’s awards assembly. This event acknowledged the Term 2 academic success of many students. It was standing room only with close to two hundred proud parents and caregivers present to celebrate their children’s achievements and shared school pride.  Bravo students and thank you to the many who juggled work schedules and commitments to come. Keep an eye out for the next one.

And then came “Juvenescence” (the state of being youthful or of growing young) – this diverse and visually spectacular exhibition was officially opened at Jump Ship Brewing on Wednesday evening, drawing a large crowd of parents, friends, community, and staff members. Showcasing student artwork from PLHS and the TLC (Transition & Learning Centre), the collection ranges from painting, drawing, photography, design, mixed media, printmaking and more. The work has been produced by students from all six-year levels (7-12) and some pieces are available for sale (and have already sold!). We urge you to get along to Jump Ship (11-13 Edinburgh Street) throughout the month of August to check out the large display. Take a bow Jump Ship, for connecting student endeavour with community appreciation. (Please note: Jump Ship is open Wednesday-Sunday from 12noon to 9pm)

We thought you should know that PLHS has some YASTA students – YASTA stands for Young Aboriginal STEM Thinkers of Adelaide. In partnership with the University of Adelaide, our young Aboriginal students are researching the physics of how sound travels through water. They are drawing on local Aboriginal knowledge and heritage, using the stories of how Barngarla fishers used their voices to sing to sharks and dolphins. Our students’ work is ground-breaking – keep an eye on this space.

Recently, seven PLHS Aboriginal boys climbed four peaks in the Flinders Ranges as part of their Operation Flinders program (most groups only climb two)… I’m puffed just trying to write about this! The boys completed this and many other challenges during their camp. Operation Flinders is a character- and team-building experience that tests belief, stretches physical and emotional limits, and truly is a whole-of-life learning and living program.

Why did I join Governing Council? Well, I like to know what is happening for my child. I get a buzz from knowing that the students are excelling and are offered a diverse and engaging curriculum. I’m learning too as I go, and I get to meet, connect and celebrate the many successes and achievements of students and the school. I like being part of a winning community team and influence decision-making. I feel satisfied knowing that the Governing Council works as parent partners with the school to make a difference for all kids. Want to know more or join the action?  Please call the school and they will connect you with us.

It’s coming… the Governing Council and school team will look to hold another Open Night next term (once the evening light returns and the weather warms up). Popular with the community, this is a fabulous way of visiting your school, meeting teachers, and connecting a sense of future for your child. More details to come.

Yep, school planning for 2025 has begun; please let your friends and contacts know that it is important to express their intention to enrol their child/ren for 2025.

Go for gold, PLHS!

Cheers,

Brian Gabb and the Governing Council Team
