Often in a Maths class, students will ask their teachers “When am I going to use this in real life?” Earlier today, Mr Kris Sjostrom and Ms Beck Paterson attempted to answer their Year 8’s by taking them on an in-class excursion to Rex’s Sport Simulators. Here they played three holes of golf on a par 3 course, giving them the opportunity to explore the application of directed numbers in a real world context.
These students will commence their first mathematical investigation and written report in coming weeks; it is envisaged that by actually playing a few holes, they will grasp the concept of directed numbers more thoroughly. In addition, the teachers were entertained by many students performing great impressions of Happy Gilmore!
Maths can actually be loads of fun with very useful applications in everyday life. We extend our gratitude to Rex Spriggs of Rex’s Sport Simulators (Blackman Place) for welcoming us on his premises.
