On Wednesday April 8th, thirteen of Port Lincoln High’s very best athletes departed the school by bus and ventured all the way to Adelaide to compete in the annual SSSSA athletics carnival. Our team, in combination with both Far West and Navigator College, was chosen to compete based on successful individual performances at our school sports days and interschool carnivals. After a long day in the bus on Wednesday, students enjoyed a pleasant team dinner at the Watermark Hotel, before arriving at Brighton Secondary School to set up camp and get a good night’s rest in before a big day of competition.
An early start on Thursday saw us arrive at Santos Stadium early; this allowed our squad to embrace the opportunity of competing inside a recognised athletics arena. Although they were nervous, our students were super excited by the experience and demonstrated real pride and competitiveness throughout the day.
A few brilliant individual performances from PLHS students are worthy of special recognition:
- Amelia Stevens: 1st place Division 1 3000m & 400m
- Lachlan Biddell: 1st place Division 1 Javelin
- Zoe Proude: 1st place Division 1 Discus
Our students competed extremely well all day and were very well-behaved. Our Far West team managed to secure third place overall (just two points behind second place); however, their effort and commitment could not be faulted.
After a big day of competition, it was straight back on the bus to begin our long journey back to Port Lincoln; we arrived at around 11pm. All students were brilliant and should be extremely proud of their efforts. A very successful trip for both students and the school.
