The Optus Crows Cup is an interschool football carnival that encourages girls to give football a go in a fun, safe environment. The annual 9-a-side carnival promotes physical activity, introduces positive role models and offers a genuine pathway for female footballers in SA.
This year, over 4,000 female students are expected to participate in one of nineteen carnivals across the state, including the one held here in Port Lincoln at Centenary Oval last Wednesday.
Teams from PLHS, St. Joseph’s School, Navigator College, Cummins Area School, Tumby Bay Area School and Wudinna Area School participated in near perfect conditions, with a north-westerly breeze favouring the southern end of the ground.
Our team was led strongly by Captain Zoe Proude, who performed well in the ruck all day. Tayah Liffner and Monique Farr were strong all over the ground, while excellent defence was provided by Delta Proude and Charlotte Stigwood. Lilly Durdin provided plenty of run through middle, along with Ali Secker and Jessica Greenfield. Goal scorers included Monique Farr, Zoe Proude, Kiarah Taylor and Ellie Makuch.
Huge improvement was shown throughout the day; we went down to Wudinna by just three points in the final game. Thanks to the Adelaide Crows for hosting the event, and well done to our entire team for having a go and showing great sportsmanship throughout.
